Giallo

What is giallo?

Giallo is a horror film genre orginated in Italy in the 1960s.
A combination of arthouse and horror, giallo is known for its striking cinematic shots and over-the-top plot lines. Most giallo films center a mysterious anonymous killer and a helpless woman trying to solve the myster with enduring extreme levels of paranoia.

Everything is not what it seems.

Slasher

A slasher film is a subgenre of horror films involving a killer stalking and murdering a group of people.

Critics cite the Italian giallo films and psychological horror films such as Peeping Tom (1960) and Psycho (1960) as early influences.
Some slasher tropes include:

  • A “final girl”
  • Gory kill scenes
  • Teenage victims
  • Small-town or isolated-location setting
  • A revenge-driven backstory for the killer
  • The killer is masked or facially disfigured/deformed
  • Sexualcharacters die while a virgin character survives or dies last
